You can customize the layout, design, and look and feel of Poetry X by changing the theme through our handy theme changer. Every major site feature is available in each theme.

Metropolis

Metropolis is a steely gray monolith with subtle art deco trim and a left-hand sidebar. Metropolis features a fixed width and larger serif text.

“Classic Blue” is a traditional, solid yet simple theme with a flexible liquid layout and sidebar on the right. Clean sans-serif fonts make on-screen readability easy and fun. Serif headers add a touch of print-world class. This is the current default theme.

How Themes Work

The web pages on Poetry X are styled using CSS [info on CSS]. Each "theme" is a different style sheet that is loaded in your browser when you view Poetry X.

Since the layout of the site is controlled by the code in the style sheet files, by building more than one theme users can choose between various layouts rather than be stuck with whatever the site's designers think is a good design for you. Each layout can vary greatly while still offering the exact same content.

Terminology Explained

The definitions of our themes include words like “liquid” and “serif” which may be confusing to non-web-designers. The following is a brief explanation of the terminology used on this page.

Liquid Layout: A “liquid” layout is a layout that grows or shrinks depending on the width of your web browser window. The placement and size of some page elements may also adjust. The downside of liquid layouts is that the page is fluid, so the design changes (slightly) to suit your current browser size.
Fixed Layout: A “fixed” layout keeps the same width no matter what size your browser window is. The advantage is that design elements remain in the same place, and the downside is that the design doesn't grow with a wider browser window. However, fixed layouts keep texts to a readable width and re-sizing the browser doesn't introduce an excess of white space.
Serif: A serif, or “stroke” is a font or typeface with ornaments at the upper or lower ends of the character. If a font does not contain these decorative strokes they're referred to as “sans-serif”.
